Saturday 14th July – Cat Corner 1st swim opposite the Lodge!!
We settled in on our first night and were ready for a night of catching fish. It was a slow start until it all went off. My bite alarm was absolutely screaming, so much that the light went from green to red. I struck my rod and thought shit! I knew it had to be big but nothing could of prepared me for what was to come.
After 40 minutes and a few fags the fish was getting tired, it had also managed to collect a few other lines which to my dad’s dismay meant that he didn’t have a fish. We finally saw the head of the biggest catfish I’ve ever seen in my life. It was then that we tried to net the fish and after breaking 2 of Gary’s nets (sorry Bruv) I realised that I would be getting into the lake with the fish. So Charlie took the rod and I jumped in, I was nervous as I still hadn’t realised the sheer size of the fish. To say that I couldn’t even wrap my hands around it would be an understatement it was f***ing huge!!
By this time we had started to untangle some of the lines and still had hold of the catfish. We had two nets wrapped around it and were ready to try and tie it up to figure out how to get it out and weigh the thing. Charlie still had the rod with the hook in its mouth. As this was all happening the hook came out of the cats mouth. I tried to hold onto the fish but it was becoming harder, it was then at that crucial moment that the fish swam away never to be seen again. We didn’t get photo but I felt completely sick that we had been fighting with this fish for about an hour and twenty minutes and it had got away.
Without a doubt this fish was the biggest fish I have ever caught, the best fight I’ve ever had with a fish and I’m taking it all day long because I had five witnesses and it was f***ing amazing!!
Lodge Lakes is an amazing place and gary is a top top host. The banter never stops and he pulled it out of the bag for Josh’s birthday. The fishing was slow and tough but that won’t stop us from coming back to the little place of perfection. In my opinion top banter, top hospitality and tough fishing but its called fishing for a reason eh !!
